In today’s world with today’s technology and access to the Social Media platforms available to us, we are noticing a trend…
Acceptance of Delayed Gratification is LOST
Social media portrays the PERFECT life, the perfect lighting, the perfect everything, leaving those (typically) viewing it to have a sense of FOMO, or a feeling of ‘why can’t that be me’, ‘i’ll never see the success she’s having’, ‘i’ll never be that fit’… etc.
These negative self talks are doing you NO good at all, and I need to point something out to you… THEY STARTED AS A BEGINNER TOO. Sure there’s possibly some talent and sheer luck on their side, but that’s not all that got them there. They also had to have determination, grit, hard work, & resourcefulness on their side.
Just today I was reflecting on my past year blogging – I thought about my first blog, how it ‘tanked’, how I wanted what my blogger inspiration had but I didn’t see all the work they were putting into it, all the additional assistants they had, and their sheer determination to get the $h!t done. I didn’t realize the strategy it took and the consistency it required. I wanted what they had and I wanted it now! I failed to realize where they started, which is where I was! They, too, started as beginners too… Fast forward to today with my self titled blog. I’m in a better place! Sure, I don’t produce but an average of maybe 4 posts a month, with a handful of sponsored posts and affiliate collaborations, but I now am humming at a higher rate with those categories AND accumulating content! It’s a marathon, people!
Do you wear sneakers?
Strange question, right? Do you wear sneakers or tennis shoes (whatever you call them) that have shoelaces? Do you remember when you had to learn how to TIE those shoes?? Did you perfect it all at once?
Chances are, probably not. But you kept trying. Your mom or dad kept helping you, teaching you, guiding you, and motivating you to not give up. And guess what, YOU’RE ROCKING TYING YOUR SHOES TODAY!
Same. Thing. Scalable to life.
Don’t forget to pin this for later!
Millennialization of Life
Now, let’s dive into this instant gratification trend… We are seeing it everywhere. The ‘I WANT IT NOW’ mentality. INSTANT gratification is almost ruining life, right? We pretend that we are only wanting to make things more efficient, but we are losing the true moral of the story: We just don’t want to wait for the good stuff. Think you’re immune to the millenialization as a Gen X-er or an older age group? Have I got some news for you…
Millennialization of Entrepreneurship
We are seeing a constant trend within the realm of Entrepreneurship and across the masses of small business owners – we are noticing the ‘I NEED it NOW’ mentality is permeating to the forefront of everything. We know that a lot of owning your own business is to make money – and this is a huge ‘WHY’ for people. But as Social Management coaches who dabble in business building, planning and strategizing, we are noting that this isn’t exactly enough. The money aspect is creating a lot of stress for you as an entrepreneur, and you’re losing sight of why you really started your business. More on defining your ‘why’ and building your brand, here.
Millennialization of Marketing
Admittedly, I am a millennial. Don’t try to hard sell to me, don’t cold message me, and definitely don’t ask me to talk on the phone … lol… If I have a question and I ask you on social media, and you don’t answer, I probably won’t be doing business with you. I’m not high maintenance, I’m just efficient, and I like to know that IF I need support, I can get it within my preferred means.
Ok, bare with me here – I said all that to say that with today’s marketing strategies and awareness of WHO is doing most of the spending in the market – millennials – we need to take into account HOW, WHAT, WHY they want to be ‘pitched’ to. And it’s anything but ‘pitching’ to them. A lot of marketing to millennials is coming down to the phrase that makes my skin crawl because of its over use and sometimes distorted meaning: ‘Attraction Marketing’. Millennials are more prone to purchasing from you if they feel part of your brand (so you’ve accepted them into your prospective customer base, and they feel you are talking directly TO them with your posts), that they have immediate access to answers if they need any, that you are being straight up with them (none of this secretive stuff like not disclosing price, brand, etc), and that they can do all of the bookings/purchasings/etc without having to talk to a human on the phone.
Are you seeing a trend here?
They are all about being efficient with their time (some say it’s the immediate gratification that they need), and maximizing their resources all while getting what they want in the end. Are your marketing strategies and booking options readily millenialized? Is your brand structured to support talking TO your prospective clients?
