The MOST common question I get lately, (second to ‘How far along are you?’) is by a landslide ‘Do you know what you’re having?’…
This question is such a hard one because, YES we do want to know what we are having, but no, we don’t officially know yet. HUGE kudos to those of you out there that decided to be surprised for your kid or kiddos, I’m acknowledging my control freak side and saying I need to know lol. Plus, Patience is not a Virtue I was lucky enough to master… And while the waiting is surely one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in a while (our Anatomy Scan is October, 26th), it’s a great reminder that – WOW, how lucky we are to have a healthy little one in there that we have the joy of knowing no matter if it’s a girl or a boy, our lives are about to get THAT MUCH CUTER!
I struggle to put into words how much of a blessing (and a surprise) this little one is to our family – while, no, we didn’t plan this addition, we know that it’s exactly what we need, and if I’m being honest, if we waited until we thought we were ‘ready’ it would be years upon years from now. It’s hard for me to share that information because I know so many people in real life AND on social media that have struggled with conceiving or will sadly never get to carry a child – my heart breaks for you if you are reading this, and while I’m not entirely enjoying the process of being pregnant at this point, I’m still grateful to be on this journey.
My favorite part, though, SO FAR has been the gender myths. While you tune in to hear my husband roll his eyes (yes you can literally hear his eyes roll about this topic), I’m enjoying trialing each of them on for size. While I don’t believe this is the end all be all to the answer of the gender of our little one, it is fun to see how my results match up, AND it’s something to preoccupy me in the mean time. Plus, even tho science is everything, John has been supportive in my having fun trialing all these myths and wives tales.
So, without further ado, let’s jump right into some of the popular Gender Myths!
Gender Myths
There are SO many myths out there, and a quick trip over to good ole Pinterest will get you exactly the starting point you need to dive right in, so … here we go! They get weird, so be sure to read all the way to the end haha. & be sure to let me know what you think I’m having!
How are you carrying?
High = boy ; Low = girl
I definitely feel like my ‘bump’, even though I feel like I’m just a blob right now of boobs and bloat
Score: Girl 1, Boy 0
Baby’s Heart Rate
Less than 140 = boy ; Higher than 140 = girl
At our last appointment, the fetal doppler read 158 bpm for little one’s heart rate. NOW, if you read any resources about fetal heart rate, studies have shown that there isn’t a true trend here with higher or lower than 140 determining the sex of the baby.
Score: Girl 2, boy 0
How is your skin?
Clearer = boy ; Worse = girl
Well, friends, I’m not sure if this is thanks to my new Skincare I’ve been using (read more about that here), the collagen I take, or that I’m a freak when it comes to washing my face and using safe products, but I have to say my skin is so much clearer than before!
Score: Girl 2, boy 1
Nausea
Yes = girl ; No = boy
Well, Idk if I’d call it nausea – I don’t hardly get sick now, but the 2 weeks after we found out I was pregnant, My nose drains constantly down my throat now – yay me- and I would cough myself into gagging which would then make me nauseous. So, this is a draw.
Score: Girl 2, Boy 1, IDK 1
Cravings
Sweet = girl ; Sour = boy
DEFINITELY not sweet, yuck AF right now. Sour, kind of – sour patch kids, sour watermelons, sour gummy bears – YES! But ALL THE SALTY, gimme. Hands down my biggest cravings have been salty.
Score: Girl 2, Boy 2, IDK 1
Leg Hair
More hair = boy ; less hair = girl
Lol, well this is a weird one ya’ll… but yes – I’ve definitely noticed hair growth is FASTER than EVER even before I started taking my collagen again.
Score: Girl 2, Boy 3, IDK 1
Husband’s Family History
More brothers = boy ; more sisters = girl
John definitely has ALL sisters.
Score: Girl 3, Boy 3, IDK 1
Belly Shape
Front = boy ; Hips/butt/thighs = girl
DEFINITELY carrying all out front – including the boobs… we talk about this openly, it’s not weird. lol
Score: Girl 3, Boy 4, IDK 1
How cold do your feet feel?
Colder = boy ; Warmer = girl
Ya’ll… who the HECK comes up with these?! lolololol My feet are always cold unless I have socks on. So, I can definitely say they are not warmer.
Score: Girl 3, Boy 5, IDK 1
More on Cravings
Fruit = girl ; meat/cheese = boy
Lol, this is also going to be a toss up because the first 2 weeks after we found out I was pregnant, I was DOWNING some strawberries, mashed potatoes, and junior bacon cheeseburgers from Wendy’s (shout out to my girl Key-Key … she made the best ones lol). So, calling this a toss up.
Score: Girl 3, Boy 5, IDK 2
The size of your nose
bigger = boy ; smaller/no change = girl
My nose hasn’t grown, friends. But I wish it did so I could BREATHE!
Score: Girl 3, Boy 6, IDK 2
Chest size
bigger = boy ; no change/smaller = girl
LOL we have already established that the ‘girls’ have definitely assumed their ‘upgrades’ I’d have probably needed to nurse. As I wasn’t all that ‘equipped’ before, I feel this is the higher power’s way of making sure this kid gets well fed HA!
Score: Girl 3, Boy 7, IDK 2
Urine Color
bright = boy ; dull = girl
Hmmm, again, another REAL WEIRD question… My urine fluctuates always depending on how much water I drink, you know – like most humans… So, even though I would probably weigh this on the side of more bright, I’m going to call this a toss up as I do have some urines that are dull-er. lol. Again. Weird.
Score: Girl 3, Boy 7, IDK 3
Age at conception + Month at conception =
Even number = boy ; odd number = girl
I’m 28 and was 28, we guess if I’m 18 weeks now, and I ‘math’ correctly, this gives us June, and 6 + 28 = even number!
Score: Girl 3, Boy 8, IDK 3
Hair
Full/shiny = boy ; thin/stringy = girl
My hair has always been full and shiny, and there has been no change. How would you score this one? Boy? Girl? I’m tossing it up as an IDK for now.

Baking Soda Test
fizzes = boy ; flat = girl
Another one that utilizes urine! Weird! Also, if you do a quick Pinterest search for how to conduct this test, you’ll see these cute mamas-to-be holding what looks like their nice drinkware from their kitchens. Yeah, NOPE! How bout we use some plastic disposables, ladies? #Tiptuesday… They recommend to do this first thing in the morning, and of course, I did not – couldn’t wait lol.. So my results will be inconclusive, but I’ll still add them to the tally. Mine was flat.
Score: Girl 6, Boy 8, IDK 4
Mother’s Dreams
They say a mother’s intuition is a force to be reckoned with… But I have to be honest here – I’ve had some STRANGE dreams lately. I did have a very vivid dream one night that it is 100% a boy, but we shall see!
Score: Girl 6, Boy 9, IDK 4
Final Tally from Myths
With a sweeping but still mildly close race, It’s a BOY! If you believe those types of tests. lol Now, we wait for the real actual science news and see how right or how wrong we were!
Regardless, theres’s a 50/50 shot its one or the other, there’s ONLY ONE, and we are happy parents to a HEALTHY human baby lol.
Did I miss any myths? I want to try them ALL while we have no clue what we’re having! So send them my way! hello@sydneydelucchi.com

I have three boy and I had big nose for all of them. My face just got swollen. My theory is that a girl is more difficult pregnancy, a little more draining. Obviously, I don’t know for sure as I have had only boys. But from seeing other friends pregnancy.
I don’t know what you will have; I feel like I need to see you to get the full scope.
Either way, you will be a great mommy. Congratulations again on your little blessing!
