You’ve been there. Sitting in the carpool line, at the store, getting your hair done, scrolling Facebook. Scrolling past your friend’s vacation photos, some spammy copy/paste post, and there you have it – you land right on the page of a friend of a friend’s niece’s best friend’s aunt who was telling you all about ‘how to solve the x’ shenanigans that you’ve always been wondering a solution to. Through further super sleuthing, you come to find out this helpful gal happens to love watching Friends with a bottle of pinot and her cat, Bob. Did ya’ll just become best friends? Raise your hand if you’ve been there, you #nosyAF person, you. 😉
Being nosy isn’t a problem anymore and we are about to dive right into how the new Facebook Algorithm is going to help you and your clients/customers be even more proficient sleuths.
So, what’s happening to Facebook?
ALGORITHMS. A mathematical equation that attributes numerical data to your posts, determining how ‘important your post is’ and how long it needs to stay in front of peoples’ eyes. It’s what keeps the more popular (likes and comments) at the top of your newsfeed longer, and why Entrepreneurs as well as everyone utilizing Facebook for marketing are concerned about the new update.
Want all our best tips? We have an exclusive group for that.
Mid December, Facebook dropped a press release that alerted all it’s users of upcoming changes – immediately taking toll on Facebook business pages, and inevitably personal pages – in hopes to reduce the amount of spam cluttering their platform. The overly summarized version is that Mark got into some hot water over the security of Facebook, there were Russians, and Spam, and Politics, and hacking… Do we need to say more? Probably not.
The Facebook Update:
The update is a big ole list of ‘what not to do’… don’t do this and don’t do that, and you’ve probably seen some crazy training videos that are focused on the negatives of this update. That’s where this post is going to be different. So let’s run down the list of ‘What not to do’ and then change our mindset on HOW we can overcome it.
- NO Spam Accounts.
- NO ‘baiting’ Calls to Action. (Comment, Tag, Like, Follow, Share, Vote, React)
- NO artificially boosting your own content. (Commenting on posts to boost them back to the top of the feed – for example: commenting on your most previous live video that you are about to go live again.)
- NO links in post caption or in the comments.
- NO copy/paste posts with stock images.
PHEW – anyone have the urge to do ALL of those things right now just because they said you can’t? You rebel, you.
The Mindset Shift
Everyone knows the key to growth is found in reframing your mindset. A simple mindset shift from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘YES, I can!’ can create amazing positive affirmations AND results. So let’s take a moment, breathe and regroup. It’s so easy to think about all the things you can’t do instead of all the things you CAN do! Your business is not tanking. Your Facebook page will be fine. And, most importantly, this update is FANTASTIC for your growth.
It’s time to make social media social again. That is essentially what this new Facebook update is forcing you to do.
5 Crucial Tips for the New Facebook Update:
Let’s break down the 5 NO’s and reframe them in a positive way that you can act on. These 5 tips only skim the surface of the detail we get into in our group – check it out if you think it would be a great fit.
Tip #1: AUDIT your account.
Facebook is cracking down on SPAM and spammy accounts so be sure all your profile information is complete, up to date, and allows people to be #nosyAF. We want people to be nosy, they will learn about us, and if we are utilizing our accounts as thoroughly as we can, if the snooper is someone that fits your target audience (aka Tribe), they will seek you out even more. This is probably the most important thing you can do IMMEDIATELY. So, bookmark this post, share it with friends (tab on the left hand of the screen) and go make sure your account is up to par!
Tip #2: GENUINE Calls to Action (CTA).
Have you ever gotten sucked into a Live video or a novel-length post that claimed something the post-er never talked about? Yeah we’ve been there too… The lockdown on click-bait style calls to action is something we are SO excited for! The limitation on verbiage in your posts proves to promote ACTUAL engagement, rather than asking people to act. So, get to know your audience and see what gets them going. This will actually give you a BETTER insight to what posts actually perform well and which ones do not. It’s time to get creative, folks!
Tip #3: Consistent ‘On Brand’ Content.
Be consistent, be YOU, and build your foundation. They say ‘if you build it they will come’, and that’s not entirely the case for social media… It’s more along the lines of ‘If you build it, nurture it, stay consistent with it, engage, they will come and stay.’ There is a lot of controversy over whether you should ditch your Facebook page if you have under a certain number of followers due to the limitations on reach, etc. We are firm believers that if utilized properly, and your content is scheduled with intent, you should absolutely continue to utilize your Facebook business page. As your brand/business grows, you will need somewhere professional and official to send your fans and customers for updates — you can’t have them messaging your personal facebook page forever.
Tip #4: Leave them wanting more.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. You blog, you are a YouTube content creator, or something along those lines. You have content that you utilize Facebook to promote that just so happens to live off the Facebook platform. THIS IS THE EXCEPTION. The idea behind this update lies within the fact that Facebook wants to keep humans on their platform as long as possible. The have companies paying for ads and for them to get paid, they need eyeballs to see those ads (or ears to hear them). Now, that being said, posts that keep people engaging on the Facebook platform WILL perform better than those with links, so be sure to schedule intentionally. Maybe sprinkle some different types of media posts into your feed – Live video (it’s here to stay and Facebook is dumping boatloads of money into improving it. Are you using it? Our Social Media Masterminders are. AND they’ll be learning how to ROCK it, too!), interactive/opinion posts, etc. Be creative. Add value. Solve a problem. Let them be #nosyAF.
Tip #5: Original Content!
Let your followers see YOU! Post about what you know about. Take your own photos, post your own captions, come up with your own ideas. It’s ok to be creative! Need help with content creation? We have you covered there! Yet another topic we cover in our group!
So, take a deep breath, and know that if you solve your tribe’s problems, add value to their day, and connect the dots, you will continue to ROCK at social media.
